"One Didn't Expect a Tank to Float" (Britain at War issue 146)
I was absolutely honoured to be asked to take part in the D-Day 7th anniversary coverage for Britain at War, the UK’s bestselling military history magazine. As my father served in the 15th/19th The King’s Royal Hussars, I had a degree of personal investment in their sister regiment, the 13th/18th Royal Hussars (Queen Mary's Own), and it meant a lot to me to be able to preserve their stories.
Organising the interview was no easy feat, but we were able to sit down with Major-General Stuart Watson, CBE, and listen to his memories of being a young lieutenant in 1944. He told me how he prepared for the Normandy landings, training with the DD (duplex drive) tanks, and shared his impressions of the incredible day itself.
"One Didn't Expect a Tank to Float" appeared in Britain at War issue 146, priced £4.80. Find out more at britainatwar.keypublishing.com.
