It was such an incredible privilege to not only contribute to commemorating the 75th anniversary of the escape from Stalag Luft III, but to do so as part of the cover feature in Britain’s bestselling military history magazine.

As I was writing the opening piece and providing the context for the copy that followed, my aim was to keep it tonally quite neutral and knowing that the key figures were being covered by a later article, I widened the scope to talk about life in the camp generally, the aftermath of the Great Escape, and the tragic closure of the camp ahead of the Red Army advance.

The Great Escape appeared in Britain at War issue 143, priced £4.80. Find out more at britainatwar.keypublishing.com.
